A small home-based microbakery in Glasgow, Maple Leaf Bakery, has emerged victorious in a tough competition to be crowned as Scotland’s Best Croissant winner. The bakery, which operates from a small kitchen, has garnered a loyal following due to its high-quality baked goods, particularly its award-winning croissants.

Maple Leaf Bakery sets itself apart by focusing on quality rather than quantity, producing small batches using traditional techniques and top-notch ingredients. The dedication to their craft paid off as they excelled in the competition held at the Balmoral Hotel’s Esk Suite on Monday, October 28, sponsored by the Edinburgh Butter Company.

Competing against other top bakeries from across Scotland, such as Jeju Baked Goods, Kaf Coffee, and Dune Bakery, Maple Leaf Bakery presented six plain croissants for judging. The panel of judges, including renowned pastry chefs and bakery owners, meticulously evaluated each entry based on various criteria such as shape, color, pastry development, texture, and taste.

Maple Leaf Bakery owner, Rebecca Slade, expressed her gratitude for winning the competition, especially as a small home-based bakery. She acknowledged the talent and dedication of fellow artisan bakeries in Scotland and thanked the Edinburgh Butter Company for their support.

The judges unanimously agreed that Maple Leaf Bakery’s croissant was a standout, earning high scores across all categories. The competition, supported by sponsors like The Balmoral Hotel and Rackmaster Baking & Catering Equipment, aimed to showcase the strength and creativity of Scotland’s artisanal baking scene.

In recognition of her achievement, Rebecca received a restaurant voucher for a top Edinburgh eatery and a bespoke trophy crafted by O&Co Blacksmiths. The organizers emphasized the diverse range of entries from talented bakers, highlighting the richness of Scotland’s baking community.
