Katy Lironi, a well-known singer and author, has recently launched her memoir, “Matilda in the Middle,” at Mono in Glasgow. The book, which officially debuted on October 25, is a heartfelt account of Katy’s life, music, and family.

As a former member of bands like The Fizzbombs and The Secret Goldfish, Katy’s life has revolved around music. Her husband, Douglas MacIntyre, is a musician and record producer, while her daughter, Amelia, is part of the rising stars Quad 90. Additionally, Katy’s brother and sister-in-law founded Altered Images, adding to the family’s musical legacy.

“Matilda in the Middle” is not just a story of music and family. It also delves into the challenges Katy has faced, including experiences of miscarriage and interactions with medical and educational institutions. Throughout it all, music has been a constant source of strength for Katy.

Growing up in East Kilbride, Katy was exposed to a diverse range of musical influences, from traditional jazz to glam rock. However, it wasn’t until she moved to Edinburgh to study publishing at Napier College that she became involved in the C86 indie scene of the 1980s. The Fizzbombs, a band she was a part of, enjoyed success in the indie music scene, performing gigs, recording singles, and appearing on BBC Radio 1 Sessions.

Katy’s memoir also highlights her friendship with comedian Mel Giedroyc, who has endorsed the book. The two met in the late 80s and collaborated on a humorous rap together. Katy is excited about the launch of her book, although she admits to feeling nervous about sharing her personal story with the public.

In addition to her musical pursuits, Katy and Douglas founded SandFest, a series of charity gigs that raise funds for Down’s Syndrome charities. Katy now works for Down’s Syndrome Scotland and is actively involved in supporting individuals with learning disabilities. The book also sheds light on the various musical and theatrical groups that Katy’s daughter, Matilda, participates in, highlighting the importance of these organizations in her life.

Overall, “Matilda in the Middle” is a poignant and honest portrayal of Katy’s journey through music, family, and personal challenges. It celebrates the power of music in overcoming obstacles and the role of family in shaping our lives. The memoir is a testament to resilience, love, and the beauty of embracing our unique stories.
