Stuart Armstrong, who is a free agent now, has bid adieu to Sheffield Wednesday after just four months. The former Celtic star made his way to the Owls in January following his departure from Vancouver Whitecaps. He signed a short-term contract that was set to end at the close of the season. However, the contract will not be extended as Armstrong prepares to move on.
In his brief stint with Sheffield Wednesday, the 33-year-old midfielder featured in 11 games for the English Championship side. Unfortunately, he found himself on the list of players being released by the club as their contracts expired at the end of the campaign. On the contrary, former Rangers player Josh Windass secured his spot in the team as the club exercised the option on his contract. Additionally, contract extensions have been proposed to Scots Barry Bannan and Callum Paterson. Among the players departing the club alongside Armstrong is former Motherwell winger Marvin Johnson.
Armstrong, a beloved figure at Celtic Park, boasts an impressive resume with four league titles, two Scottish Cups, and two League Cups. His departure from Celtic Park occurred in 2018 when he made a £7 million move to Southampton. During his time with the Saints, Armstrong played a pivotal role, featuring in the Premier League for five seasons and one season in the Championship. Following the conclusion of his contract with Southampton last summer, the Scotland international headed to Canada to join MLS team Vancouver. However, his stay in Canada was short-lived as he returned to England in the winter transfer window to join Sheffield Wednesday. Now, Armstrong is on the hunt for a new club, sparking speculations of a potential reunion with Brendan Rodgers at Celtic, especially after Rodgers mentioned him in a recent press conference when discussing Scottish players he enjoyed working with.
