Plans to extend Chryston High School and construct a new community hub in Coatbridge’s Sikeside neighborhood have received the green light from the council, marking a significant development for the growing community. The approval was granted during a council planning committee meeting on August 15, paving the way for both projects to kick off in early 2025.

The decision to extend Chryston High School comes as a response to the increasing demand for educational facilities driven by the rapid growth of housing developments in the area. The proposed extension aims to accommodate an additional 500 students, ensuring that the school can effectively cater to the needs of the expanding population.

In addition to expanding its capacity, the school’s extension project includes plans for various facilities to enhance the overall learning environment. These facilities will encompass general classrooms, outdoor learning areas, sports facilities, and an Early Years Centre, providing students with a well-rounded educational experience.

The renovation of Chryston High School’s existing building will also be a key aspect of the project, with internal remodeling work set to commence alongside the initial site preparation activities. This comprehensive approach to the extension project underscores the council’s commitment to not only addressing capacity issues but also enhancing the overall quality of education provided at the school.

As part of the broader community development efforts in Sikeside, the council has approved the construction of St Stephen’s Community Hub, a multifaceted facility that will serve as a hub for various community activities. The hub will house a new primary school, a Language and Communication Support Centre, a nursery class, and extensive community and sports facilities, catering to the diverse needs of residents in the area.

With a capacity to accommodate 483 children, the St Stephen’s Community Hub will be situated on the combined site of the former Sikeside Primary School and the existing St Stephen’s Primary. The integration of these facilities will not only optimize the use of space but also create a cohesive community hub that fosters collaboration and engagement among residents.

In addition to the educational and community amenities, the completed site will feature significant landscaping efforts and new parking areas, further enhancing the overall appeal and functionality of the hub. These enhancements are designed to create a welcoming and accessible space that encourages community participation and interaction.

Councillor Michael McBride, convener of education, expressed his enthusiasm for the approved projects, emphasizing their importance for the growing communities in the area. He highlighted the significance of the expansion at Chryston High School in addressing capacity constraints and providing a conducive learning environment for students and staff. Additionally, he underscored the value of the St Stephen’s Community Hub as a resource that will benefit the wider community and contribute to the overall well-being of residents.

The council’s commitment to delivering first-class facilities for residents both now and in the future underscores its dedication to supporting the evolving needs of the community. By investing in education and community infrastructure, the council is laying the foundation for a thriving and inclusive environment that fosters growth, collaboration, and well-being. The approval of the school extension and community hub projects represents a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of life for residents in Coatbridge’s Sikeside neighborhood.
