Renfrewshire is gearing up for a month-long celebration of Christmas this year, with the local authority teaming up with Scotland’s Theme Park to bring festive fun to the area. The Christmas programme is set to run from November 28 to December 28, excluding Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
One of the highlights of the celebrations is the return of the outdoor ice rink, which will be located at Paisley Cross, along with funfair rides in County Square. Residents with a PA postcode or students with a Young Scot card can enjoy discounts on tickets for these activities.
To kick off the festive season, a day of live entertainment is planned for November 28 in Paisley’s town centre. The event will feature performances from the Paisley Rock Choir, Turning Point Renfrewshire’s Adult Theatre Group, Jennifer Scott Dance, Vision Dance Academy, and local band Proposal. Renfrewshire’s Provost, Lorraine Cameron, will officially switch on the town’s Christmas lights at 5.30pm.
Pauline Allan, Renfrewshire Council’s events manager, expressed excitement about the upcoming festivities, stating, “We’re delighted to be teaming up with Scotland’s Theme Park again to bring some festive fun to Paisley this Christmas. There’s a host of Christmas activity across the town, and we want to add to Paisley’s Christmas offer, making a visit to the town centre an ideal choice for family days out, catching up with friends, or Christmas shopping.”
In addition to the Paisley celebrations, Renfrew and Johnstone will also have their own Christmas lights switch-on events. Renfrew’s event will take place on November 23 in the town centre, while Johnstone’s event will be held on November 30 in Houstoun Square. Various towns and villages in Renfrewshire will also host community-led Christmas events and lights switch-ons.
Local school children have the chance to participate in the Provost’s Christmas Card Competition, with the winners given the opportunity to switch on the Christmas lights in Paisley, Johnstone, or Renfrew. This year, in partnership with the charity I Am Me, all cards entered in the competition will be sent to elderly residents across Renfrewshire.
