A new TV series set in Victorian Glasgow based on Guy McCrone’s trilogy of books called Wax Fruit is in the works by Little White Rose Films. The show has already gained interest with an all-star cast including Ashley Jensen, Shirley Henderson, Martin Compston, Molly Windsor, and Elaine C Smith. The team behind the series is hoping to attract a commission and has even received support from Creative Scotland.
Executive producer Sarah Purser describes the show as an epic drama filled with passion, humor, and ambition. The characters, especially the strong women of the Moorhouse clan, are portrayed as bold, beautiful, and unapologetically Scottish. Elaine C Smith, known for her role in Two Doors Down, plays Mrs Barrowfield, a doctor’s wife and matriarch in the series.
Smith believes that the Victorian saga depicted in Wax Fruit is something unique and different from the typical Glasgow stories of drugs and violence. She is excited about the potential of the series and thinks it will be fabulous. The team has material ready for up to five seasons with 10 episodes each, showing the scope and ambition of the project.
Sarah Purser, the executive producer, has a personal connection to the story of Wax Fruit as she discovered the book in an attic flat in Glasgow. She sees the series as a way to showcase the disappearing world of Victorian Glasgow and shine a spotlight on its architectural gems. Purser believes that like Outlander, Wax Fruit has the potential to boost Scotland’s economy and global profile through tourism and interest in its heritage.
To support the Wax Fruit campaign and help attract TV commissioners, a petition has been set up on Change.Org. The team is hopeful that the series will not only be a success but also bring attention to the rich history and culture of Glasgow. It is a project that aims to celebrate the city’s past while creating opportunities for its future.
