Dunns Food and Drinks Celebrates 150 Years with Community Initiative
A family-owned Scottish wholesaler, Dunns Food and Drinks, has joined forces with Community Links, a charity in South Lanarkshire, to mark their remarkable 150 years in business with a heartwarming community project called Make A Meal Of It. This inspiring initiative, generously supported by the Austin Hope Pilkington Trust, is dedicated to empowering local families by teaching them how to prepare healthy, affordable meals using seasonal, locally sourced ingredients through interactive cooking demonstrations.
Empowering Families Through Cooking
Working hand in hand with three local schools, Dunns Food and Drinks and Community Links are reaching out to 150 families residing in urban areas of South Lanarkshire. The inaugural session, led by Dunns’ executive development chef Donnie Munro, recently took place at the wholesaler’s development kitchen in Blantyre. Families were treated to a festive feast costing just £10 for a family of four, featuring a delicious roast Christmas chicken with sage and onion stuffing, sticky vegetables, and roast potatoes, as well as a creative chicken and rice soup made from the leftovers to emphasize the importance of reducing food waste.
A Gift of Goodie Bags and Recipes
Each participant received a thoughtful goodie bag containing all the necessary ingredients and recipes to recreate the meal in the comfort of their own homes. This hands-on approach not only equips families with valuable cooking skills but also instills a deeper appreciation for local, sustainable produce. Julie Dunn, the managing director of Dunns Food and Drinks, who also serves as the Chairperson of Community Links, expressed her pride in giving back to the community as a family business rooted in South Lanarkshire.
Looking Ahead to a Lasting Legacy
Julie Dunn shared, “Make A Meal Of It is just the beginning of our efforts to create a positive and lasting impact on our community. We hope to inspire families to embrace wholesome, budget-friendly meals while fostering a stronger connection to locally sourced ingredients.” With additional sessions planned for early 2025, the legacy of this meaningful collaboration between Dunns Food and Drinks and Community Links is set to continue making a difference in the lives of South Lanarkshire residents.
