The 25-year-old central defender hopped over to Belgian side KV Mechelen on a short-term loan back in January, but now he’s gearing up to head back to the east end of Glasgow this summer.
Welsh has been putting in the work and earning his keep as a regular in the team as the Belgian season starts to wrap up. He’s pretty confident that his time in Belgium will really pay off when he heads back to the Scottish champions.
Welsh spilled the beans to the Record, saying, “I’m telling ya, I’ll head back to Celtic as a much-improved player.
“From a tactical and technical standpoint, I’ve definitely leveled up. Plus, I’m way fitter now with all the game time I’ve been getting and keeping up with playing every week.
“I’ll also be coming back with a lot more experience under my belt after playing regularly in one of Europe’s top leagues.
“No matter what goes down, I’ll head back as a better player and person.
“Living away from and outside of Glasgow has really helped me mature a lot.
“It’s been pretty sweet being at a club where I know I’ll get to play if I perform well.
“It’s given me a ton of confidence to go out there and show that I can be a key player in the team.”
Welsh still has a little over two years left on his Celtic contract.
He barely got any playtime with Brendan Rodgers’ squad this season before he took off on loan.
“We’ll see what goes down in the summer.
“Obviously, I’ll make my way back to Celtic,” he said.
“I’ve got two years left on my contract, so the plan is to head back to Celtic.
“I’ll show up for pre-season and we’ll take it from there.”
