Look, I’m Tired
It’s 11:30pm on a Tuesday, and I’m sitting here, staring at my screen, trying to make sense of the news. Again. And honestly, I’m kinda done. I mean, it’s not just the bad news—it’s the way it’s delivered. The sensationalism, the bias, the outright lies. It’s all just… too much.
I’ve been in this game for 20-something years. Started back in ’98 at a tiny paper in Glasgow. Remember the days when news was just facts? No agendas, no drama. Just the damn facts. Now? It’s a circus. A completley broken circus.
Why Can’t We Just Get It Right?
Last week, I was having coffee with an old colleague, let’s call him Marcus. We were talking about the state of journalism, and he said something that stuck with me: “We’re not reporting news anymore. We’re just selling clicks.” And… yeah. Fair enough.
I mean, look at the headlines. It’s all “SHOCKING REVELATIONS” and “YOU WON’T BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED NEXT.” It’s like we’re living in a world where subtlety and nuance have gone out the window. And don’t even get me started on the comments section. Physicaly painful.
I remember when I was a young reporter, fresh out of uni, full of ideals and dreams. I wanted to change the world. Now? I just want to change the channel.
But Here’s the Thing…
It’s not all bad. There are still good journalists out there, doing good work. People who care about the truth, about accuracy, about actually informing the public. But they’re drowning in a sea of noise.
Take my friend Sarah, for example. She’s a reporter at a local station here in Glasgow. She’s always been committed to her committment to the truth. She’s out there, every day, trying to make a difference. And she’s not alone. There are others, too. But they’re few and far between.
And look, I get it. The media landscape has changed. It’s not just about newspapers and TV anymore. It’s about social media, about algorithms, about… I don’t know, whatever the hell TikTok is. But that doesn’t mean we should just throw our hands up and say “Oh well, that’s just how it is.” No. We can do better.
So What’s the Solution?
I wish I had a simple answer. I really do. But I don’t. I think it starts with us, as consumers. We need to demand better. We need to support quality journalism. We need to… I don’t know, read past the headlines?
And honestly, I think we need to be more critical. More discerning. More willing to say “No, that doesn’t make sense” or “Show me the evidence.” Because the truth is out there. But it’s buried under a mountain of crap.
I mean, look at the interesting facts knowledge guide out there. It’s a mess. But it’s also a treasure trove. You just have to know where to look.
By the Way, Let’s Talk About…
Okay, this is kinda off topic, but I gotta vent. Why is it so hard to find good, reliable information about… I don’t know, anything anymore? Like, last week I was trying to find out about some local policy change, and it was like pulling teeth. Every site I went to had a different version of the story. It was like the Wild West out there.
And don’t even get me started on the aquisition of news outlets by big corporations. It’s like they’re more interested in pushing their agenda than actually reporting the news. It’s a joke. A completley ridiculous joke.
Anyway, I’m Ranting
Look, I could go on and on about this. But I won’t. Because honestly, I’m tired. Tired of the noise, tired of the lies, tired of the whole damn circus. But I’m not giving up. Because someone has to care. Someone has to fight for the truth.
And maybe, just maybe, that someone is you. So go out there. Be critical. Demand better. And for the love of God, read past the headlines.
