The recent research conducted by Professor Jeanette Findlay and Dr Marco Guidi from the University of Glasgow revealed that a majority of Celtic fans are in favor of establishing an independently elected Fan Advisory Board. This study, funded by the British Academy Leverhulme Trust, surveyed Celtic stakeholders worldwide, including season ticket holders and small shareholders, to gather insights into areas where fans feel changes are needed within the club.

Following the widespread backlash against the proposed European Super League, there have been increasing calls for greater fan participation in major decisions within football clubs. The UK government has even announced a fan-led review of football governance, with plans to introduce a new football regulator in England. However, similar responses have not yet been seen in Scotland.

The survey findings showed that more than two-thirds of Celtic fans support the creation of a Fan Advisory Board, with even higher percentages among season ticket holders and fan organization members. Many fans expressed dissatisfaction with the current level of fan engagement at the club, with one in four describing it as either ‘poor’ or ‘very poor’.

Key findings from the research include fans’ preferences for the Fan Advisory Board to be established and run by the Celtic Trust in collaboration with Celtic PLC. Additionally, a majority of fans believe that the board should be incorporated into the Articles of Association of Celtic PLC. There is also a desire for elected representatives to be selected from a diverse range of supporters, including fan organizations, individual season ticket holders, and small shareholders.

Professor Jeanette Findlay emphasized the importance of fan power in influencing club decisions and expressed hope that the survey results will facilitate meaningful conversations with the club. The research aims to enhance stakeholder engagement and increase fan satisfaction within Celtic FC.

The initial research findings are currently being shared with various stakeholder groups, including Celtic FC, to gather feedback before the final report is completed. It is evident that Celtic fans are keen on having a stronger voice and involvement in the decision-making processes of their beloved club.
