Closing After 30 Years: Glasgow Indie Record Label Bids Farewell

After three decades of shaping the music scene in Glasgow, the Creeping Bent Organisation is preparing to close its doors. Douglas MacIntyre, the mastermind behind this renowned indie record label, reflects on the journey that led to this bittersweet moment.

A Journey Through Time

As a teenager in Strathaven, Douglas was captivated by the C81 and C86 cassettes released by Rough Trade in collaboration with NME. These tapes, filled with the sounds of Vic Godard, The Subway Sect, and Aztec Camera, ignited his passion for music.

The upcoming Creeping Bent 30 / C81 – C86 – GO !! event at Oran Mor promises to be a nostalgic celebration of the label’s legacy. With performances from Katy & The Cords, Mackenzies, and The Port Sulphur C81 Ensemble, attendees will be treated to a night of music history.

A Lasting Legacy

Throughout its existence, Creeping Bent has been a platform for emerging artists and established names alike. Acts like Adventures in Stereo, Monica Queen, and Port Sulphur found a home on this independent label, leaving an indelible mark on the music landscape.

Douglas’s vision for Creeping Bent was simple yet profound – to create art and foster a community outside the mainstream. With support from John Peel and the music press, the label flourished, pushing boundaries and challenging conventions.

Embracing the Future

As Creeping Bent prepares to bid farewell, Douglas has one final act in store for fans – a series of album releases featuring Gareth Sager, Sexual Objects, and The Secret Goldfish. Ending where it all began, with an album by Article 58, the label will close this chapter with a bang.

Despite the challenges and triumphs of the past 30 years, Douglas remains grateful for the journey. As he looks towards the future, he is excited to see what the next chapter holds for him and the artists who have graced the Creeping Bent stage.

In the words of Douglas MacIntyre, “We’ll have a few more surprises to unleash before we go. It’s going to be a fun year.” Join us as we bid farewell to a Glasgow institution and celebrate the enduring legacy of Creeping Bent.
