Social Enterprise Success in Glasgow
Social enterprises in Glasgow are being celebrated as “catalysts for change” after a recent awards ceremony recognized their outstanding contributions to the community. At the forefront of this recognition is a motion presented by councillor Malcolm Mitchell to the full council, highlighting the achievements of city-based social enterprises that shone at both the Social Enterprise Scotland Awards and the Glasgow Times Community Champion Awards.
Recognition and Accolades
Glasgow-based organizations took home an impressive five out of ten awards at the 2024 Social Enterprise Scotland Awards. The Courtyard Pantry Enterprise, Eco Drama, Media Co-op, Community Renewal Trust Rom Romeha, and Simon Community Scotland all received accolades for their commitment to social and environmental impact. Additionally, various other groups were honored at the Glasgow Times Community Champion Awards for their remarkable efforts in different categories, showcasing the diverse range of social enterprises making a difference across the city.
Empowering Communities
Councillor Mitchell’s motion emphasizes the vital role that social enterprises play in transforming the lives of individuals in our society. These enterprises are driven by structures, ethos, and values that maximize their effectiveness in creating positive change. The motion also recognizes the leadership and coordination provided by the Glasgow Social Enterprise Network, in partnership with Glasgow City Council, as instrumental in supporting and promoting the growth of social enterprises in the region.
Building a Wellbeing Economy
The national awards coincide with the launch of the new national social enterprise action plan 2024-2026, titled ‘Driving a Wellbeing Economy for Scotland.’ This ambitious plan aims to strengthen Scotland’s social enterprise ecosystem and expand opportunities for entrepreneurs, social enterprises, and community groups. With a £3.2 million investment in the Social Entrepreneurs Fund over the next two years and the introduction of the Social Growth Fund offering 0% interest loans, the council is committed to supporting social enterprises in driving positive social and environmental changes for a more inclusive and sustainable future.
Through their innovative models that prioritize people and the planet, social enterprises in Glasgow are paving the way for a future where economic progress goes hand in hand with building more inclusive communities for all. As the council members gather to consider the motion on Thursday, the spotlight remains on the remarkable achievements of these social enterprise champions who are shaping a brighter future for Glasgow and beyond.
