Police have given a heads-up about the upcoming Celtic fans’ title party and an Orange Walk in Glasgow this weekend. The Hoops Ultras have declared that they’ll be throwing an unofficial ‘title bash’ in the Trongate area on Saturday, May 17, close to the city center. The event is set to happen after Celtic’s Scottish Premiership match against St Mirren at Celtic Park, as announced by The North Curve. Additionally, an Orange Order parade is expected to draw thousands of participants to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day on the same day.
The Assistant Chief Constable, Mark Sutherland, of Police Scotland, has acknowledged the concerns surrounding the events in the city. He mentioned that the police force is collaborating with partners like Glasgow City Council to reduce any disruptions to the wider community. A ‘proportionate policing plan’ has been devised to prioritize public safety on the day. Sutherland has also cautioned against gathering in large groups and emphasized the need for respect. Due to the events taking place on Saturday, Glasgow city center is expected to be much busier than usual.
Glasgow City Council has advised Celtic fans to steer clear of disruptive mass gatherings in the city ahead of the unofficial title party. The council spokesperson emphasized the importance of celebrating in a way that respects the city and its residents, highlighting the negative impact of disorderly events on the community and businesses. They urged fans to avoid unsafe and disruptive gatherings at places like Merchant City/Trongate. On the other hand, concerns have been raised by the Merchant City and Trongate Community Council regarding the clash of the title party and the Orange Walk on the same day, fearing an escalation of tensions.
