On a chilly autumn night in Glasgow, there is nothing quite like seeking shelter in a cozy local pub to escape the cold and rain. The Old Toll Bar, located at the top of a bustling road in the Southside, is a true Victorian gem that has stood the test of time for 150 years.
Reminiscent of the grand palace pubs of the Victorian era, the Old Toll Bar boasts towering pillars, a long bar made of polished mahogany, hand-painted stained-glass windows, and old-fashioned candelabra that cast a playful light against the vintage mirrors. These stunning features transport visitors back in time to an era of elegance and charm.
Unlike many similar establishments that have undergone modern renovations, the Old Toll Bar has retained much of its original aesthetic since its establishment in 1874. While the downstairs lounge bar has seen some updates, the upstairs area remains a nostalgic step back in time.
The interior of the pub is a sea of dark wooden floors, ceilings, and bar, showcasing the beauty of mahogany craftsmanship. A back gantry holds eight large whisky casks, adding to the pub’s old-world charm. The iconic clock with a stag perched on top, bearing the pub’s name and year of inception, is a timeless centerpiece.
Beyond its architectural beauty, the Old Toll Bar is known for its vibrant live music scene, with music and the arts playing a significant role in its history and atmosphere. Notable figures like members of Simple Minds have worked behind the bar, and the pub has been featured in films like “Filth” and the upcoming series of “Shetland.”
In 2022, the pub was filled to capacity as legendary musician Paul Heaton treated patrons to a night on the house as part of his Beautiful Southside initiative. The event brought the community together, with people dancing and enjoying the lively atmosphere.
Manager Grant Montgomery, who has since moved to Ryan’s Bar in Govanhill, described the evening as a special and generous celebration that united the community in a joyous celebration. The Old Toll Bar continues to be a beloved gathering place where locals come together to enjoy music, good company, and a touch of Victorian elegance in the heart of Glasgow.
