The Rich History of The Corinthian: From Mansion to Club
Nestled in the heart of Glasgow, The Corinthian stands as a testament to the city’s rich history and architectural heritage. What was once a grand private residence known as Virginia Mansion has undergone a series of transformations over the centuries, evolving from a house to a bank, a court, and now a popular cocktail bar and club.
Originally commissioned by the prominent Glasgow tobacco merchant George Buchanan in 1752, Virginia Mansion was a symbol of wealth and opulence in its time. The mansion changed hands several times before being completely remodeled in the 1870s to serve as the headquarters of the Glasgow and Ship Bank, which later merged with the Union Bank of Scotland.
A Storied Past: From Bank to Court
The grand building on Ingram Street underwent significant changes during its tenure as a bank, including the addition of a new telling room with a glass cupola and a new entrance from Virginia Place. With its high ceilings, towering pillars, and polished desks, the bank catered to the financial needs of Glasgow residents until the 1920s when it relocated to a new premises.
Following the bank’s departure, the building transitioned into a series of different uses, including offices, a county council headquarters for Lanarkshire, and a sheriff court. The former bullion store became a venue for court hearings, hosting trials and legal proceedings until the courts eventually moved out in the late 1990s.
The Transformation into The Corinthian Club
In the late 1990s, the historic building was lovingly restored and transformed into The Corinthian Club, a private members club that seamlessly blends the building’s classical architecture with modern amenities. The former telling room of the bank now houses the Tellers Bar and Brasserie, where guests can enjoy a meal or cocktail while admiring the impressive hemisphere cupola above them.
As patrons wander through the corridors of The Corinthian, they are greeted by Corinthian pilasters that evoke the grandeur of ancient Rome, adding to the club’s sense of sophistication and elegance. Despite the various changes in use over the years, the overall appearance of the building has remained remarkably intact, preserving its timeless beauty and charm.
